It can also incorporate kinesiology, homeopathy, massage therapy or cranio-sacral release.

Brindabella Natural Health Centre Naturopaths offer a minimum of one hour consultation, evaluating a detailed history in order to successfully pinpoint the origin of dis-ease. For instance there is often a stress or predisposition prior to the onset of an acute condition.

The Naturopath’s aim is to support the person back into balance; to support the individual with specific therapies and/or remedies and ease the person into positive lifestyle change and wellbeing.

The Naturopath during the assessment may take vital signs ie Blood Pressure, blood tests, discuss one’s ability to deal with stress & management, lifestyle assessment including exercise and eating/weight choices & management. The Naturopath is often a patient’s long search for a health practitioner who will listen, note and sense how it is for that person living with discomfort or suffering. The Naturopath cultivates therapy appropriate for each individual and not stereotype. The provision of personalised Naturopathy care to each person allows the naturopath to approach each person as a holistic unity of mind, body and spirit.

The Origins of Naturopathy

Around 400 BC, principles of Naturopathy were established by the Hippocratic School of Medicine where Greek philosopher Hippocrates maintained viewing the ‘person as a whole’. He purported that it is essential to take a detailed history; to note many details by way of clues to understanding imbalances within the body. He established the ‘laws of nature’ to induce cure. In Naturopathy, the healing power of nature means that the body has the ability to heal. Hippocrates school taught these and this is how Naturopathy takes its principles;

  • The healing power of nature- nature has the innate ability to heal vis medicatrix naturae
  • Identify and treat the cause – Hippocrates maintained that there is always an underlying cause, be it physical or emotional
  • First do no harm- the Naturopath uses well documented treatments without causing stress to the body
  • Treat the whole person- a therapy plan is prepared with many aspects of a person’s being taken into consideration
  • Naturopath as a teacher – the Naturopath empowers the patient to take responsibility for his/her own health by teaching self-care
  • Prevention is better than cure – the Naturopath may remove toxic substances and situations from a patient’s lifestyle by way of preventing the onset of further dis-ease.
  • “Health is the expression of a harmonious balance between various components of man’s nature, the environment and ways of life – nature is the physician of disease”. Hippocrates

    Man-woman kind is part of nature and the universe, and health treatments back in ancient Greece was achieved by living in accordance with this principle. Harmony was fostered with appropriate nutrition, herbs, water treatments, rest, sunshine and fasting. Medicine, religion and science were intimately related and the person was seen as a whole – a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being. Hippocrates: the philosopher and physician understood that the same vital force that made up the universe and nature flowed through the body and it was this dislocation from this source that caused illness. These ancient Naturopaths recognised that if one could restore the vital force within the patient, the body would naturally heal itself.

    The body has the capacity to heal itself when given the right conditions. Naturopathy subscribes to the basic premise of the body’s own innate intelligence.

    Today, most of us are aware of the mind-body connection, intuition, meditation, deep sates of rest, positive thinking, dream analysis and more. These all relate to innate intelligence. The more we understand about ourselves; how our body operates, responds consciously or from the patterning subconscious; how we think & feel; what triggers us into stressful and unwanted behaviour, then more choices become available to us. Here healing can begin to take place. Choices open doors to new possibilities. The payoff from awareness is empowerment which is liberating and exhilarating!
